Guide to the Tokyo International Music Competition for Conducting

Past laureates: where are they now?

19th Tokyo International Music Competition for Conducting, Japan

The Competition received 331 applications from 49 countries. 14 participants from 8 countries were selected and will face the first preliminary round on 27th and 28th September 2021. The selected participants are: Luka Hauser (Germany), Ayaka Ueda (Japan), Yukito Yamawaki (Japan), Earl Lee (Canada), Mamoru Suzuki (Japan), Satoshi Yoneda (Japan), Yukari Saito (Japan), Samy Rachid (France), Mikhail Mering (Russia), José Soares (Brazil), Bertie Baigent (England), Hankyeol Yoon (Republic of Korea), Koji Ishizaka (Japan), Alexander Marinesku (Russia).

Prizes (If no finalist is considered deserving of a particular prize, then that prize shall not be awarded.)

  • 1st Prize: Certificate, medal, and cash award of 2,000,000 yen
  • 2nd Prize: Certificate, medal, and cash award of 1,000,000 yen
  • 3rd Prize: Certificate, medal, and cash award of 500,000 yen

Debut Concerts for Prize Winners and Supplementary Awards: Japan Concert: on Tuesday, July 5, 2022; Hungary Concert: on Friday, April 29, 2022

Covered costs for participants

Overseas contestants (including Japanese nationals living abroad) who participate in the first preliminary round will be provided the following subsidies:

  • An international airfare subsidy, to be paid at the time of registration for the first preliminary round as follows: 

          50,000 yen/contestant for contestants coming from Asia; 
          100,000 yen/contestant for contestants coming from other regions.

  • Hotel accommodation, to be provided for all contestants during the period of the competition (3:00 p.m. on September 26 to 11 a.m. on October 5, 2021). Please note that accommodation expenses will not be paid for hotels other than those designated by the Competition Office.

Attending the competition

Audience is welcome to all of the rounds of the competition. The final round is also available to watch online from anywhere in the world after a free registration on the site.
