« The Stockholm strings sounded wonderfully sonorous, and with such accuracy and clarity in counterpoint of celestial beauty... »

About the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra

The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1902 and has since 1926 made its home in Konserthuset Stockholm in the city centre. The orchestra endeavours to reinvigorate and expand the traditional symphonic repertoire, organising an annual, internationally renowned composer festival and regularly commissioning and premiering new works. The orchestra participates annually at the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony and the Nobel Prize Concert.

Alongside the orchestra’s title conductors Sakari Oramo and Alan Gilbert (Conductor Laureates) and Franz Welser-Möst (Eric Ericson Honorary Chair) the orchestra regularly works with a prestigious list of guest conductors, for instance Herbert Blomstedt, Andris Nelsons, Manfred Honeck and Simone Young.

The award-winning American conductor Ryan Bancroft was appointed Chief Conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 2021. He begins his tenure from the 2023/24 season. Ryan Bancroft grew up in Los Angeles and first came to international attention in 2018 when he won both First Prize and Audience Prize at the prestigious Malko Competition for Young Conductors in Copenhagen. Bancroft and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra continue their great work honouring musical traditions, performing both contemporary and Swedish music, and championing a more gender-balanced repertoire.

Through tours and award-winning recordings the orchestra has confirmed its international standing, to the point of being called ‘one of the finest orchestras in the world’ (Die Welt).

The orchestra’s digital platform, Konserthuset Play, offers a large selection of filmed performances available for free streaming worldwide.

Since its launch in January 2016, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (RSPO) has offered one year's training on site at the Konserthuset Stockholm. The RSPO Orchestra Academy aims to give participating students heightened knowledge and understanding of the profession by giving them the chance to work with – and alongside – one of Europe’s leading symphony orchestras.
