Three Russian works, two debuts and one superb orchestra create an evening of outstanding music making at The Lighthouse.

The Opernhaus Zürich revives a successful production by Barrie Kosky with a great cast under Gianandrea Noseda's baton.

Kazuki Yamada returns to the CBSO with an ever-popular orchestral suite, an under-appreciated concerto, and a fabulous pianist in Alexandre Kantorow to play it. 

New Zealand’s Gemma New conducts the RPO in a programme with a Slavonic feel, with an overture by Dvořák, a concerto by Shostakovich and a popular symphony by Tchaikovsky. 

“A place to call home” and “Exiles and Dreamers” is how the LPO marketed this concert. No need for such additional flourishes in an interesting juxtaposition of Tchaikovsky, Dutilleux, George Walker and Dvořák. 

In a programme of Lutosławski, Richard Strauss and Tchaikovsky conducted by Paavo Järvi, there are no weak links in the playing of the EFO and Stefan Dohr’s versatility on the horn is once again on display.
