There is hardly another 19th century composer who was a more devout Catholic than Anton Bruckner. His faith provided the deep, infinite foundation for his artistic work – not just for his last symphony, which he explicitly devoted “to God the Beloved”, but also and especially for his Eighth Symphony in C Minor. Although this is dedicated to the worldly ruler, Kaiser Franz Joseph I, Bruckner himself describes it as a “mystery”. Being as liturgical as it is prophetic and known to be among the most extensive of its kind, the interpretation of this work always poses a challenge.
