Brahms and Bruckner: in Viennese concert life around 1880 they were regarded as the Big Two. Their audience was large, but incompatible: if you liked Brahms's deeply human romanticism, you couldn't possibly see anything in the mystical Bruckner. The music lover of today knows better: what could be better than first celebrating life on earth with Brahms and then letting Bruckner take you to heaven?
