Stephen Hough’s recorded Beethoven cycle received universal acclaim after its 2020 release, so his return to St David’s Hall for the composer’s Third Piano Concerto is hotly anticipated. Tchaikovsky’s barnstorming symphony traverses a personal journey from darkness to light, despair to triumph, and its recurring ‘Fate’ motif winds its way through each movement before appearing in the guise of a march in the blazing finale. The unique musical landscape of Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir launches this concert.
