Anne-Sophie Mutter | Violine |
Maximilian Hornung | Cello |
Lambert Orkis | Klavier |
They open with Beethoven’s Piano Trio in D, known as the Ghost for its hushed and implacable slow movement, said to have been inspired by the ghost episode from Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
Mutter and her colleagues also play a contemporary work: the Ghost Trio by the American composer Sebastian Currier.
Haunted by the presence of Beethoven’s and other 19th-century piano trios, it has been described by Musical America as ‘a 23-minute, nine-movement work of considerable substance’. Mutter’s ensemble gave its world premiere in New York in 2019.
Mutter and Orkis continue the programme with Clara Schumann’s songful Three Romances. And finally there is Brahms’ gloweringly dramatic Violin Sonata No.3, a piece filled with an energy suggesting the long influence of Beethoven on the composer.
